Personal Take
the girls got it here
I flew through the first few episodes. Could not stop watching. The middle of the season, though. A little slow. Not enough to make me lose interest, just enough to make me impatient for what it was building towards.
The biggest surprise was how quickly I got attached to the characters. I hadn't even properly watched Season 1. Just bits and pieces and the last few episodes. I thought I'd need time to connect with the Gang. Turns out, I didn't. Katara, Sokka, Toph, Appa and Momo grew on me almost instantly.
Aang surprised me the most.He isn't written as the overpowered chosen one who saves the world because destiny conveniently picked him. He's just a child. Forced to carry responsibilities no child should ever have to. Learning powers he never asked for. Making mistakes. Doubting himself. Letting people down. The writers never shy away from his insecurities or poor judgement, and that's exactly what makes him so relatable.
The villains stole the season. Azula and Zuko completely owned every scene they were in. Their sibling dynamic became my favourite part of the story. Rivalry. Love. Resentment. Jealousy. The desperate need to be seen by the same father. Every interaction feels loaded.
These two have the potential to become the strongest characters in the entire series!!!!!!Zuko especially. You can almost trace where each part of him comes from. Uncle Iroh and his mother nurtured the good in him. The Fire Nation nurtured the prince. His conflict has never been about choosing between good and evil. It has always been about choosing which version of himself gets to win. Season 2 quietly lays the foundation for him to become the kind of Fire Lord the nation actually needs.
One of my favourite things about Avatar is that it never treats power as a masculine trait. Katara, Toph and Azula are some of the fiercest characters in the series, yet each embodies strength so differently. Katara's empathy is her strength. Toph's confidence is almost infectious. Azula is just... terrifying. Every single one of them commands attention in a completely different way.I already know where the story is headed. Aang will eventually master fire-bending. That isn't the exciting part. The cliffhanger is. It left me wanting the next season immediately. As someone who loves children's literature, Avatar has easily become one of my favourite series. Second only to Lost in Space. A very difficult spot to earn.
- real world feel
- emotional
